Double-Axis Fiber Optic Gyros (TGX-1, TGX-1D)

Components:
The fiber optic gyroscope mainly comprises the fiber optic ring module, optical component, information processing unit, electrical connector and so on.

Function:
Detect the angular rate signals in the direction of X and Y axles.

Basic Principle:
The fiber optic gyro is developed on the basis of the Sagnac effect. A beam of light is split and the two beams are made to follow the same path but in opposite directions. On return to the point of entry the two light beams are allowed to exit the ring and undergo interference. The relative phases of the two exiting beams, and thus the position of the interference fringes, are shifted according to the angular velocity of the apparatus.

A superluminescent diode (SLD) source produces light that is fed into one port of a coupler. Of the two outputs of the coupler, one provides the light to a Y branch waveguide. Upon the exit from the Y branch, each beam passes through a phase modulator that is necessary to create a nonreciprocal phase modulation. After the modulators, the two beams counter propagate through a fiber optic coil. The optical beams are then fed back through the Y branch and coupler and interfered on a detector. After the beam that has been interfered passes through the coupler, the optical signal will be converted into an electrical signal by the PIN detector. The signal is proportional to the angular velocity of the carrier, and the angular velocity signal of the carrier is calculated by the detection of the electric circuit. After the modulation of light by the Y waveguide modulator, the optical power that is received by the PIN detector will transform from cosine signal to sinusoidal signal with the changes in Sagnac phase difference. Consequently, the largest sensitivity is found near the zero input. The direction of the angular velocity can be input respectively.
